After 280 hours in the above instruction, the student can move on to clinical training in:

  • Theory: 200 hours
  • Hairstyling techniques and cutting: 500 hours
  • Shaving: 25 hours
  • Shampooing: 5 hours
  • Facial hair design and waxing: 10 hours
  • Scalp treatment techniques: 10 hours

Can I Apprentice as a Barber in Georgia?

Required to earn a barbering license

Yes, you can become a licensed barber by completing a 2,280-hour apprenticeship in 14 months (barber II license) or a 3,000-hour apprenticeship in 18 months (barber license).

Similar to cosmetology apprenticeships, barber apprenticeships comprise 3,000 hours and must include:

  • Hairstyling techniques and cutting: 1,000 hours
  • Permanent waving, relaxing, and chemical application: 540 hours
  • Scalp treatment techniques: 20 hours
  • Shampooing: 10 hours
  • Shaving: 50 hours

  • Additional instruction: 400 hours

For barber II apprenticeships, training comprises 2,280 hours and must include:

  • Facials: 20 hours
  • Hairstyling techniques and cutting: 1,000 hours
  • Scalp treatment techniques: 20 hours
  • Shampooing: 10 hours
  • Shaving: 50 hours
  • Theory: 780 hours
  • Additional instruction: 400 hours

Georgia Barber Licensing Requirements

To get your Georgia barber license, you must pass two tests and pay several fees after completing an apprenticeship or a barber program.  

You have to take a practical and written exam. After your training, you can contact the testing administrator, PSI Services, to schedule your exam.

The written exam lasts 90 minutes and costs $59 to take. The practical exam lasts and costs $89 to take. Taking the tests together costs $147.

On the exam day, you should arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled testing time and bring two forms of valid, signature-bearing ID with you. One must have a photo.

You will receive your written test score immediately following the exam. Practical exam results will be sent to you within 30 business days after the exam. You must score 70% to pass. All exams are in English.

The written exam comprises 100 scored items and covers:

  • Scientific concepts: 35%
  • Implements and equipment: 10%
  • Hair care services: 40%
  • Facial hair and skin care services: 15%

The practical exam covers:

  • Work Area and Client Preparation and Set Up of Supplies: First client, 10 minutes
  • Haircutting: 40 minutes
  • Work Area and New Client Preparation and Set Up of Supplies: Second client, 15 minutes
  • Shaving with Straight Razor: Variable timing
  • Blood Exposure Procedure: 10 minutes
  • Chemical Waving: 20 minutes
  • Predisposition Test and Strand Test with Simulated Product: 10 minutes
  • Chemical Relaxer – Virgin Application: 15 minutes
  • Hair Color – Retouch Application: 15 minutes
  • Cleansing Facial: 15 minutes
  • Blow Dry Styling: 10 minutes
  • Thermal Curling: 10 minutes

All supplies must be labeled in English.

Candidates needing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodations must submit an exam accommodation request to PSI and documentation from the medical professional who diagnosed them. Verification must include the description of the disability and limitations related to testing, recommended accommodations, and the medical professional's name, title, and phone number.

You have 48 months to pass your license exams. There is no limit on how many times you can take the exam.

Georgia Barber License Reciprocity

Georgia doesn't have licensure reciprocity agreements with other states, but you can apply for licensure by endorsement.

To have your out-of-state license transferred, you must:

  • Be actively licensed and in good standing.
  • Be at least 17 years old.
  • Graduated high school or the equivalent.
  • Mail a paper application to the board along with the $75 endorsement fee.
  • Provide proof of passing written and practical exams in English.
  • Provide license verification.

For applicants who can't provide proof of passing the exam in English, the board may issue a letter of exam eligibility, and the applicant has three chances to pass the exam.

The board may grant licenses to applicants who served in the military or are military spouses if they hold a valid license from another state or received training in the military that meets Georgia's license requirements.

Licensed master barbers in Georgia can become master cosmetologists and vice versa through crossover programs in the state.

Master barbers can become master cosmetologists by completing 300 training hours in the following topics:
