Required to earn a barbering license

In Connecticut, barber licensure begins with the completion of at least 1,000 hours of training. After finishing your theory and practice training, you can submit your application with a $100 initial licensing fee. The barber exam fee is $65, which covers the practical exam and the written exam. You receive your license once the board receives proof of your passing scores.

When you find the right barbering program, you will learn a variety of skills that prove it takes quality training to master these skills. You should come out of your program with the ability to perform men's cuts, basic women's styles, shaving, and various head and facial massage techniques. Many programs will also include the physiological and anatomical information in the curriculum as well.

Barbering courses may include:

  • Tools and equipment
  • Grooming and shaving
  • Shop management
  • Hair coloring

Connecticut licensees must renew their licenses every two years after licensing in the last day of their birth month. Failing to renew by this date causes your license to lapse. To renew a lapsed license, you must complete either 135 hours of education through a refresher course or successfully pass the Prometric Licensing Examination. Barber licenses cost $100 to renew.
