Missouri Esthetician Licensing Requirements
Once you’ve completed your required training hours, you can move on to the next stage of licensure—taking (and passing) your written and practical exams. Only once you’ve passed both of these can you be granted licensure.
Both examinations are overseen by Prov, in partnership with the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC). All applicants must register with Prov and submit a license application to the state board. Once the application has been approved, you can schedule your examinations.
The theory exam costs $88, and the practical exam costs $58. It doesn’t matter if you’re testing for the first time or retaking one or both parts—the fee is the same.
Lists of available exam dates and locations are available on the Prov website.
On the day of your exam, you must arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled test. If you arrive late and the exam session has already begun, you’ll be turned away, lose your exam fees, and need to reschedule.
You also need to provide a valid government-issued photo ID, sign a test center log, and have your photograph taken by the test center staff.
Theory Examination
The theory exam takes 90 minutes to complete and contains 110 items, 100 of which contribute to your final score. It covers the following areas:
Domain I: Scientific Concepts (55%)
Domain II: Skincare and Services (45%)
Practical Examination
The practical exam covers the following areas:
All products must be labeled in English.
You must score at least 75 on each exam to pass. You receive your theory results by email within minutes of completing your exam. Your practical exam results are emailed within two to three business days following the test.
If you do not pass, you may retake the exams as often as necessary but must pay the examination fee each time.
Prov complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in providing special accommodations for candidates who need assistance. If you need extra help to be able to take either exam, you must notify Prov in advance by calling (877) 228-3926.
You may need to provide written documentation from a licensed physician or psychologist documenting your disability.

If your license expires, you have two years to reinstate it. After two years (but within five), you must retake your practical examination to regain your license. You must retake both exam parts if your license has expired for five years or more.
