Once you have completed your training, you can apply for licensure via the Office of Barber and Cosmetology Licensure. You need to pass a written test and a skills test, at which point you can get your full license and start working independently.

Barber, esthetician, hairstylist and manicurist licenses expire on March 31 of even-numbered years and cost $26 to renew or $41 to reinstate if you have allowed your license to lapse. All cosmetologist licenses expire on April 30 on an annual basis. These licenses cost $32 to renew or $47 to reinstate. Currently, no continuing education hours are required to renew your cosmetology license in Colorado. However, continuing education should be considered part of the field and part of doing business as a cosmetologist.
