State License Requirements

In New Mexico, permanent makeup artists fall under the oversight of the Board of Body Art Practitioners. To become a permanent makeup technician, you must complete a permanent cosmetic apprenticeship comprised of 255 hours of training with a board-approved apprenticeship sponsor. Apprenticeship hours topics include applicable state and federal laws, sterilization theory and process, and theory and hands-on work in the discipline. You must then take and pass a written permanent cosmetics exam with a score of at least 75 percent, then submit your application to the licensing board with a $100 licensing fee.

License Renewal

In New Mexico, permanent cosmetic artists must renew their license annually. In addition to paying a $100 renewal fee, you will also have to provide information such as your current employment or establishment, current CPR, first aid and blood borne pathogen training certificates, proof of current immunizations. If you have had any criminal convictions since your last renewal, you should know that certain convictions will bar you from licensure.

Permanent makeup artistry is one cosmetology job that really gives you the chance to change lives. When clients come to you, they may be embarrassed about a facial feature, tired of never looking their best, and frustrated with traditional makeup. By listening carefully to their needs and tailoring your skills to suit what they want, you can help them rebuild their confidence and love what they see in the mirror. As a permanent makeup artist, you'll likely spend much of your time working alone. With each client, you have to complete a consultation, go through comprehensive paperwork, and make sure they are fully informed on the procedure(s) they've chosen. When it comes to actually applying the makeup, you may spend one or more appointments touching up and perfecting a procedure. Clients often come back to freshen their looks up every few years.
