How to Become a Salon Manager in Delaware

Are you looking to take your hairdressing or cosmetology career to the next level? Are you hard working, ambitious, with a desire to get ahead while staying within the beauty industry you have come to know and enjoy?

If you have a head and an interest in business, you should consider a career in salon or spa management, where you actually are in charge of the day to day workings of beauty salon or spa. The need for managers with this expertise is expanding, and you may find that it is perfect for your next step up in your beauty career!

State License Requirements

Cosmetology schools and some community colleges offer certificate programs in salon and spa management. You may want to see what programs exist in the school from which you received your hairdressing or cosmetology degree. A program may last between six and twelve months, and give you a total of 15 to 30 credits.

Education Details

The emphasis in your course work will be on the business skills you will require to run a beauty business. There will be courses in customer service, marketing and advertising, handling the finances of a small business, interviewing, hiring, and managing personnel, staff leadership, and safety and compliance laws that apply in your jurisdiction. You may need to be licensed as a cosmetologist or cosmetology instructor to manage a salon, especially if you expect to fill in for absent personnel at least some of the time. Both cosmetology and cosmetology instructor require licenses by the state, with license renewal every two years.

License Renewal

Even though you do not need a salon management license in Delaware, we think formal training and licensure is a smart move. When you earn a cosmetology license, you can have the knowledge to manage hair, skin and nail employees with confidence. Plus, you will have a better understanding of what constitutes quality work that you expect in your salon. If you decide to pursue cosmetology licensure, then you will need to renew it by October 31st in even-numbered years in order to maintain your active status with the Board of Cosmetology and Barbering. It will cost $110 to renew.

Average yearly salary for salon management in Delaware

Spa and salon managers in Delaware earned a median salary of $41,900 in 2013, the last year for which statistics were reported to O*Net. This compares very favorably to the median salary of $35,300 in the rest of the United States. Of course, this is just an average. With experience and seniority, your salary is most likely to go up each year. The projected rate of growth for this field is expected to be between 8% and 14% from 2012 to 2022, making spa and salon management a good field for new graduates to consider going into.

One of the best aspects of being a spa or salon manager is that the tasks in a typical work day are quite varied, providing you with interesting challenges to occupy your time. You will work both in the office, and out on the floor. In the office, you will handle the business's finances, paying bills, preparing invoices, and making payroll. You will need to interview potential staff, hire and fire, and manage your employees. Out on the floor, you will oversee the entire operation of the spa or salon, making sure it is running smoothly and efficiently at all times. If there are any problems or issues, you will be the one to handle them. You will need to oversee staff, making sure that everyone who is supposed to work that day appears and, if not, making arrangements for replacements or rescheduling client appointments. Sometimes you may need to substitute for a staff member who is absent. You may also have the responsibility of opening up the salon, and closing it at night. A move into spa and salon management can be an upward career move for someone in the beauty industry who wishes to take their career to the next level. If the business end of the business intrigues you, you may want to consider career direction.
