The Louisiana Board of Massage Therapy issues statewide licenses for massage therapists. A recent rule change removed the requirement for oral exams to obtain a professional massage therapist license. Massage therapy school in Louisiana must provide at least 500 hours of education, with 325 of those dedicated to the study of techniques of massage therapy and in clinical practice related skills. A full 125 hours must be in the study of anatomy and physiology. Students may take coursework in business practices, ethics, health and hygiene to complete their massage therapy school education. Louisiana guarantees students eligible for licensure are serious about their career by requiring students to attend at least 90% of the class hours in each course of instruction in massage therapy school. The Board accepts several national examinations for licensure, including the NCBTMB, MBLEx, the NCE and the exam offered by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).
