How to Become a Electrologist in Florida

Florida Electrology Careers At a Glance
  • Average salary for electrology in Florida is $34,150 .
  • There is a predicted 19.50% job increase between 2012 - 2022.

Becoming an electrologist involves learning the skills, techniques and technology to perform permanent hair removal services. Electrolysis is the process of using electricity to permanently remove hair. There are several electrolysis methods, including the single needle method, the multiple needle method, and thermolysis. To work in this field, you must complete an education program that's approved by the Florida Department of Health.

State License Requirements

The minimum training requirements include 120 hours of classroom training and 200 hours of practical experience. However, many programs go beyond the minimum requirements in order to provide you with greater depth and hands-on experience. The Electrolysis Council of the Florida Department of Health licenses electrologists. You must provide proof of completing your training hours, and you must complete a two-hour course in Prevention of Medical Errors. You must then take the Council's exam. Upon passing the exam, you receive a license that is good for up to two years, and must be renewed by May 31 of even-numbered years.

Education Details

Your education will likely include a comprehensive section on anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and the importance of hygiene while performing electrolysis. The practical portion of your education covers electrolysis tools, techniques, and state regulations. Different variables in electrolysis, including probes, timing, and intensity, will give you lots of practical experience in how to work with different types of hair.

License Renewal

During each two-year renewal period, you must complete 20 hours of continuing education.

Average yearly salary for electrology in Florida

After completing an electrolysis program, you can work in a variety of settings. Some electrolysis professionals work in beauty salons or skin care centers. Many licensed electrologists (LEs) choose to work for themselves as independent professionals. If you are interested in owning your own business, you can even open your own electrolysis center. The average earnings for LEs in Florida ranges from $28,700 in the beginning of your career to $44,100 or more with more experience, not including tips, according to O-Net. O-Net also anticipates a 20% increase in job openings for skincare specialists between 2010 and 2020.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that jobs will grow for electrologists in Florida by 12% through the year 2024. This growth rate is slightly faster than that of similar occupations and significantly faster than the average of all other occupations. This favorable job outlook is largely due to the growing concern of consumers in their personal appearance and safer, laser-free methods of permanent hair removal. The best electrologists can maximize their earnings by working in top dermatology and medical offices or opening their own electrolysis practice.
