Colorado is one of the few states with a separate hairstyling license. To become a licensed hairstylist, you need to earn at least 1,200 hours of training at an approved school. You can then schedule your skills exam and your written exam. This requires a $127 fee. All testing goes through PSI. Once you’ve met the education and testing requirements, you can become a licensed hairstylist.

Barber, esthetician, hairstylist and manicurist licenses expire on March 31 of even-numbered years and cost $26 to renew or $41 to reinstate if you have allowed your license to lapse. All cosmetologist licenses expire on April 30 on an annual basis. These licenses cost $32 to renew or $47 to reinstate. Currently, no continuing education hours are required to renew your cosmetology license in Colorado. However, continuing education should be considered part of the field and part of doing business as a cosmetologist.
