A friend recommended this place because I’ve had a hard time finding a barber I like in the city. To start with the positives: the front desk staff and the student stylist were both very kind and welcoming.
However, the actual experience with the instructor was disappointing. I understand that this is an academy and I signed a waiver acknowledging the risks, but I expected the instructor to be focused on teaching and ensuring the best possible result. Instead, the instructor seemed very distracted. At one point, she was more interested in asking if I was wearing Hermes perfume than actually supervising my haircut. It felt like she was more focused on being 'classy' than being professional.
The final result was honestly worse than I could have imagined—it was so bad that I had to go to another place immediately afterward to get it fixed. I don’t blame the student; they are there to learn. I blame the lack of professional guidance from the teacher. It’s tragicomic that I left an academy looking the way I did. I won't be returning.
Thank you for compliment(!)

I think the people who saw me did the best that they could, but if that is the case Arrojo needs
To modernize their curriculum and really
Raise the bar.
I believe I was misbooked from the get go for a barber cut when I tried to make it clear During booking that I go to salons, see female stylists and have longer hair, but instead they placed me with a barber. This barber was ill prepared for what I wanted and worked as best he could with my reference photos, but I often felt that I wasn’t listened too. I specified I wanted my bangs longer than the reference photos because I have texture so my hair tends to curl and recede when the extra weight is cut off— next thing I know my bangs are chopped off.
The trainer Grace was often around and checked in on the progress, but she did not seem any better equipped for what I wanted either. She was often just pointing out how my hair is different from the reference, as if I never got a hair cut before? She kept point out my “recession points”— a passive aggressive way of pointing out my balding pattern, in ways that I never experience before in any other salon. When I go to salons and bring a “feminine” example for my “masculine” hair or whatever, the stylist will typically talk through the differences and processes better than just pointing out flaws and making me feel embarrassed or unable to communicate.
At the end of the day— my main issue is how binary Arrojo seems to view hairdressing. You’re a prominent salon in new york city, so you will often see men getting wolf cuts or women getting close clipped cuts. It is 2026 and many people (many NORMAL people, not just trans folks) get haircuts that don’t necessarily subscribe to their gender. But really it felt like I was the first client this salon has ever seen outside their rigid ideas of gender (and let me say my reference photos were not particularly feminine). My entire appointment from walking in the door to walking out felt like no one knew what to do with me. I did not feel listened to or taken care of.
And beyond all that, when i got in the shower later that evening I could feel how uneven the cut is just from shampooing. So really it’s a poor quality haircut an a poor quality experience.
I will be fine, my hair will grow back out, but Arrojo really needs to get with the times.I’m being realistic when I recommend that any queer/trans folk find another salon; Arrojo is simply not equipped to handle us.
