Hair stylists in Maryland must be at least seventeen years old and have completed a ninth grade education. To practice as a hair stylist, you must be licensed by the state which requires that you take and pass a licensing exam. You will need to complete 1,500 hours of training in an accredited program, or a 24 month apprenticeship at a licensed beauty salon. Once you pass the test, you will be issued your license and be able to practice.

Hair design is taught as part of comprehensive hair care programs in schools of cosmetology, hair styling, and hair dressing, as well as in some vocational high schools and community colleges. There are several schools in the state of Maryland from which you can choose. All of them will teach you the basics of hair and skin anatomy and physiology, and diseases of each. You will learn to shampoo and condition, cut and style. You will learn and then practice mixing the chemicals you need to color or highlight hair. You'll get to use them using foils or a cap. You'll learn about the tools used in styling, and the latest looks. Courses will teach you about hygiene and sterilization regulations and procedures. And there may be some courses on the business of the beauty business, depending upon the program you enroll in.
