I went to EVIT expecting it to be a great experience, and that I’d learn a lot but oh my gosh I was so wrong. At my own school I did two years of culinary, I decided to switch things up for my last year of high school and take commercial baking year 1. Honestly I don’t regret it that much since I made a couple of good friends from EVIT but attending this school wasn’t really worth it. They have really strict rules at EVIT with dress code, attendance, grades, phones, what you say, at this point it feels like if you breathe wrong you’ll be written up. Anyways since I was in commercial baking our course has “high standards” so we need to follow all the rules to a t. In my course my teacher was really strict with these rules and will write you up no warning for “documentation”, but if you have 4 write ups for the same thing you’ll be suspended for a day. I feel like my teacher didn’t really give proper solutions to problems and you’ll be in trouble if you do something wrong. I remember at the beginning of the year multiple groups messed up a dough and all of us got in trouble for it. Instead of giving solutions on how to fix our mistake we got in trouble. Another time I was with 3 other people washing dishes, we were all talking and laughing, someone laughed a little too loud and we got in trouble for being too loud, and the person who laughed too loud was written up. Now you’d think sanitation and cleanliness would be really important, especially for a food course but no it’s actually not! I remember one person in my class just do really unsanitary things and they were never told not to do it from my teacher, so other students would have to tell them it wasn’t the best sanitary thing to do. Also if you forget a piece of your uniform, like god forbid your ID you will be written up for violating the uniform rules! And don’t even think about having your nails painted, acrylics, or having dangly earrings, multiple piercings, or facial piercings in first year baking, you’ll be written up each day you have them in. I had acrylics for two days during the Thanksgiving bake sale. The bake sale is like a week long where you basically just pack people’s orders. Now some other girls had their nails painted or acrylics, and I only had mine for Monday and Tuesday, my teacher pulled me aside with the 2nd year baking teacher and basically said I had my nails for 3 days and tried to write me up for those 3 days, so not only was I getting in trouble, he also had his facts wrong! I also didn’t really mesh with the teacher that well. At EVIT there are really open unisex bathrooms and I was in the bathroom washing my hands, now it seemed empty so my teacher chose that time to approach me and tell me I was bordering failing and I basically needed to get that grade up, he definitely cares for his students but chose the wrong time to approach me. After our conversation a guy came out of the bathroom stall, so least to say I didn’t really appreciate my grades being aired out to the entire bathroom. I also got written up once because I had an AirPod in while doing dishes, now when you’re doing dishes you work with five other people and for me at least I wasn’t friends with too many people so I’d prefer to listen to music rather than talk to some people, so I put one AirPod in and kept doing dishes. To be honest I thought it’d be okay since other people have had AirPods in but I was definitely wrong. My teacher saw me with it in and basically told me it was against the rules and I got written up. I remember he talked to me about it the next day too, like you already wrote me up leave me alone buddy 😭. Also if you have a problem with someone in your baking group don’t worry, instead of being put in a new group you’ll still be forced to work with this person! I feel like my teacher had some good points but he just didn’t problem solve that well, a lot of the time he was out of line, and ALWAYS up in your business. I definitely recommend the commercial baking if you can put all of this aside, but if you can’t.. don’t take this course.
